a5c7b9f00b When a Chinese rebel murders Chon's estranged father and escapes to England, Chon and Roy make their way to London with revenge on their minds. In the 1880's, Chon Wang's father and keeper of the Imperial Seal has been murdered by Parliament and royal family member Rathbone, (who steals the Imperial Seal) with Chon Wang's sister, Chon Lin, witnessing the murder. Chon Lin follows Rathbone to London to kill him, while sending Chon a letter telling him of the murder. Chon then travels to New York for Roy O'Bannon. Together they travel to England and meet up with Chon Lin to kill Rathbone and get the Imperial Seal back. I can't quite believe it, but there are sequences in "Shanghai Knights" that areintricate, hilarious, and gracefulany scene in a Buster Keaton film. The plot is disposable, but Jackie Chan is in rare form, and the creativity of his physical gags seems particularly developed this time out. Owen Wilson is equally enjoyable although he's basically doing nothing except giving off a tremendous raffish charm and good humor. The fact is, everything he says in this movie is funny. Some of it is laugh out loud, some just makes you smile. But this is one of the best times I've had at the movies in quite a while. I'm not going to waste too much time on this review, suffice to say that you need to completely ignore all the anachronisms and just enjoy it for what it is. The film initially grated on me with its, well total stupidity, especially concerning history. But there came a point about halfway through the film that it completely broke me down and I began to enjoy the movie in spite of myself. I don't watch karate movies, but some of the fight scenes struck mequite inspired, particularly Chan with that umbrella (I'm sure it's in reference to some kind of Broadway musical, don't know which one). Wilson and Chan have a remarkable chemistry and certainly don't take themselves seriously. The out-takes at the end aregoodthe movie. Actually, better.

6/10. Grating.
